Fine Line Tattoo Aftercare
Your tattoo may be small and delicate, but your skin still needs time and proper care to heal. Follow these instructions to support healing and protect your results.
Your Initial Bandage
Leave your standard bandage or wrap on for approximately 1-2 hours.
Wash your hands before removing it. Gently remove and discard the bandage. Do not rewrap your tattoo unless specifically instructed.

Daily Cleaning & Moisturizing
Begin this routine after removing your bandage and continue throughout healing:
-
Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
-
Gently wash twice daily using lukewarm water, mild fragrance-free soap, and clean fingertips. Avoid washcloths, sponges, brushes, and scrubbing.
-
Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean disposable paper towel.
-
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer or the aftercare product recommended at your appointment. Avoid thick, greasy layers.
-
Wear clean, loose clothing and use clean bedding to reduce irritation and contamination.
NOTE: Do not apply rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin unless directed by a healthcare professional.
What to Expect
Mild redness, tenderness, slight swelling, and a small amount of clear or pink-tinged fluid can occur initially. These symptoms should gradually improve.
Light flaking, itching, and small scabs may develop as your skin heals. Allow them to shed naturally. Picking or scratching can damage your tattoo and increase the risk of infection or scarring.
Surface healing commonly takes approximately 2–3 weeks, but healing varies. Continue your precautions longer if the skin remains open, irritated, scabbed, or peeling. Deeper healing continues after the surface appears healed.
Restrictions During Healing
Until the tattooed skin has healed:
-
Do not swim or soak in pools, hot tubs, baths, lakes, or the ocean. Brief showers are fine.
-
Avoid saunas and activities that cause heavy sweating, stretching, or friction over the tattoo.
-
Do not pick, scratch, exfoliate, shave, or wax the tattooed area.
-
Keep makeup, perfume, self-tanner, and irritating skincare products off the tattoo.
-
Avoid gardening and exposing the tattoo to dirt. Keep animals from touching or licking the area.
-
Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight and tanning beds. Protect it with clean, loose clothing; wait until the skin has healed before applying sunscreen.
Once Your Tattoo Has Healed
Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher whenever your tattoo is exposed to the sun. Reapply as directed, and continue moisturizing as needed. Sun exposure can fade tattoo ink.
If you notice uneven areas after healing, send a clear photo so we can assess whether a touch-up would be appropriate.
When to Seek Medical Care
Contact a healthcare professional promptly if you develop:
-
Redness that spreads or becomes more intense.
-
Increasing pain, warmth, swelling, or tenderness.
-
Pus, foul-smelling drainage, or open sores.
-
Red streaks extending away from the tattoo.
-
Fever, chills, or feeling unwell.
-
A persistent or worsening rash, bumps, or blisters.

Call 911 for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. Do not wait for a studio response before seeking medical care. If your tattoo is not healing as expected, or you have any other medical concern related to your procedure, contact a physician.

Please also notify the studio of any complication, medical treatment received, and the outcome so this information can be documented in your client record.
